The Project

Pebble Mill is an internationally renowned medical hub in the heart of Edgbaston which has evolved into a technology hub under the West Midland A38 Technology Corridor initiative. Owned by Calthorpe Estates, the site has transitioned from the BBC's pioneering television studios, into the heart of a medical quarter. The Medi Park's establishment as a healthcare and life sciences hub greatly assisted with the localities’ designation in 2013 as an internationally recognized Medical Quarter. It now hosts over 250 medical organizations, hospitals, clinics, GP practices, training facilities and is a driver for Birmingham's healthcare economy.

The Process

We initially secured the outline planning permission for a transformative Medical Park at the former BBC Studios site in 2003, including enhanced sporting facilities for community use. The first phase of development included detailed planning permission for an Olympic quality hockey facility for King Edward’s School and the community, alongside advanced infrastructure development including a sustainable urban drainage system and the site's main arterial road.

Our work has subsequently delivered planning permissions for a Bupa extra care dementia facility, the Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry and the award winning CircleHealth Hospital, England’s largest bespoke rehabilitation hospital. Architecturally rich buildings and public realm combine to create a high quality and contemporary medical campus, which has significantly improved healthcare in the region. We continue to guide the development, providing planning strategy advice, negotiating the remaining planning applications and assisting through all stages of implementation.
