Mortimer Square was built over 15 years ago and is an important public space in Central Milton Keynes, forming the central part of The Hub. The square was in need of refurbishment to create a more usable and attractive public space, that also benefitted the business that operate out of the area. David Lock Associates with DLA Architects Practice Ltd assisted CBX3 Estate Management Ltd in developing a vision to update the public realm and widen the outdoor dining offer for the surrounding restaurants and bars. Following public consultation with the Town Council, local residents and visitors of the space, planning applications were submitted and approved setting out a consistent approach to the restaurant terrace outdoor spaces inspired by the iconic porte cochere structure that can is seen throughout Central Milton Keynes when crossing boulevards. A new fountain and central space was designed to create a more attractive feature to be used year round allowing natural movement patterns, a stronger sense of arrival and departure through a new lighting scheme, more seating opportunities and the introduction of landscaping to soften the space. The design takes into account the sun path and positioning of seating to capitalise on sunshine at specific times of day and mitigating the impact of wind on the square through the creation of shelter. Recently completed, the works to the square have already led to an increase in public use and trade and were finished in time to capitalize on the late summer sun.
