Building upon our wayfinding work in Hinckley and Didcot, David Lock Associates recently completed a Wayfinding Strategy for Bolton town centre, funded by UK Shared Prosperity Funding and Towns Fund. Working closely with Bolton Council, we developed wayfinding proposals which will support the Council’s ambitious Visitor Economy Strategy to drive the future growth and success of Bolton.
Through detailed analysis, our work identified key destinations and attractions, points of arrival and movement corridors within the town centre. The strategy sets out how new wayfinding measures can be distributed through the town centre, to connect landmarks such as the University and College, markets and food halls, and open spaces such as Queen’s Park.
Our proposals, produced entirely by our in-house urban designers and graphic designers, include designs for a suite of new signage elements. Aligned with the new ‘Brand Bolton’ developed by partners across the town, the signage will contribute towards the town centre’s new, bold and distinctive identity. Alternative signage features were designed in response to sensitive historic features such as the world-renowned Town Hall and Le Mans Crescent, both of which are common film set locations.
The Wayfinding Strategy was approved in late 2024 and a supplier has now been appointed for the detailed design and implementation stages.
